How Do 3D Glasses Work?

Just the other day my friend was inquired by a character of questionable morals as to, “how do 3d glasses work?” Is it any surprise though? 3d technology sure makes you feel like we’re living in the future, doesn’t it? With people wearing funny looking glasses and pictures jumping from screens, I for one wouldn’t be surprised to see some little green men asking where they can find our leader. Of course, people are so focused on what movies to see in 3-d and how they look in their 3d glasses, that they forget to ask, “how do 3d glasses work?” You, however, are a different sort; you have come to this article in hopes of learning exactly how these 3d glasses work. Thankfully, you have not searched in vain as this article will go over and explain both passive and active 3d glasses. Read on, and reap the benefits of knowledge!

How Do 3d Glasses Work: Passive Technology

Although you may not know how do 3d glasses work, you have almost certainly use them before. This is the type of technology that movie theaters typically employ (think RealD 3d glasses; not Samsung’s infinitely more expensive models. This is because the nature of cinemas allow for two projectors and thus two images to be projected, and because passive 3d glasses are significantly less expensive.
So how do 3d glasses work in this case?
In each theater the projectors are trained on the screen. When the time comes, each is loaded up with a different version of the feature printed on polarized film. Moviegoers then wear polarized 3-d glasses; this makes it so that each one eye only use one set of images (left oriented image to left eye and right oriented image to right eye). It is as such that passive 3d glasses are able to simulate stereoscopic vision and present a 3d image.
What’s stereoscopic vision, you ask? Well, it’s funny you should ask that because chances are you are using it right now. Stereoscopic vision is what allows us to see things with depth. It is possible because we have our eyes in two different places and thus we see most things from two different perspectives. Our brains are so amazing that they are able to use their own version of triangulation and trigonometry to judge from these two perspectives of an object how far away it is. Thus, stereoscopic vision works by presenting each eye with a different 2-D image which tricks our brain into thinking it is seeing one 3d object.

How do 3d Glasses Work: Active Technology

Now that you know a little bit more about how 3d technology works in general, I’ll tell you about the other version of 3d glasses: those with active shutter technology. These types of classes are primarily used with 3d HDTV’s. Because one TV cannot present two images, for magic needs to happen at the glasses. Active shutter glasses utilize liquid crystals with polarization technology so that each lens may be darkened or made clear when electricity is applied. This allows the glasses to control which eye is able to see at any point in time. Then, the active shutter glasses are synchronized with the 3d TV so that the HDTV alternatively presents the two different perspectives whilst the lenses open and close in time with this.

Whether it be with passive technology and polarized glasses or active shutter technology with LCD glasses, 3d movie or TV viewing is pretty wild. It’s amazing that we have developed a means to simulate stereoscopic vision. Who knows what they’ll think of next! The History of 3D Movie Glasses

3d movie glasses may be older than you think. Although it has seen a resurgence in theaters and more recently TV and computer technology, the means for simulating 3d images were thought up more than 100 years ago.

Around the the turn of the 19th century when film itself was still relatively young, William Friese-Greene was struck by a revolutionary idea. By then it was known that our perception of 3d images was due to stereoscopic vision: our brains comparison of two different perspectives of the same image. These two perspectives, come about from the minute differences in placement between our eyes. From these two 2-D images, our brain is able to extrapolate what 3d object it might be viewing and how far away it is. Knowing this, Friese-Green made a radical proposition: he would present two different versions of a film, side-by-side, and then movie viewers would use a stereoscope (the predecessor of 3d movie glasses) to view the images as one.

3D Movie Glasses: The Idea of the Century

Unfortunately, Friese-Green’s idea was deemed too bulky for theatrical use, however the immediate feasibility of 3d technology set the world’s mind ablaze with possibilities. It was not until 1922 that the general public got a taste of what was to come. In Los Angeles’ Ambassador’s Hotel, The Power of Love was shown to a paying audience. To simulate 3-d images, two separate perspectives were presented (one in red and one in green). Audience members wearing their anaglyph 3d glasses then watched a film that seemed to jump out at them!
Shortly after, the Great Depression put such luxuries on hold for a time. In 1936, MGM was able to develop a series of Stereoscopic Films which were titled Audioscopiks. These were both critically and popularly acclaimed.

3D Movie Glasses and Hollywood

The 1950s then saw what was termed the “Golden Age of 3d”. every studio worth its salt was coming out with more and more 3d feature films and it seemed as if the entire country was caught up in the craze. The red and cyan anaglyph 3d movie glasses of the time became a common sight. All good things must come to an end, however. With 3d films so readily available, the general public eventually became bored of such features and the costs of filming in 3d began to outweigh the benefits. Consequently, the number of 3d films being made dropped dramatically and some wondered if the age of 3d had ended. The once common 3d anaglyph glasses had come and gone with the wind.

Thankfully, the 2000′s had something to say about that! During that time 3d technology has had a popular revival and is being incorporated into more and more products. Not only can we watch movies in 3d these days, but also TV not to mention playing our favorite computer games. 3d technology and eyewear has never been so ubiquitous. One might wonder if things will take a turn for the worse much as they did during the 1950s as people become to get bored of 3d technology and 3d movie glasses. However, I don’t know about you but I have seen a whole lot of 3d films with 3d movie glasses and I still feel pretty far from bored!

Pros and Con of LCD Glasses and Active Shutter Technology

3d technology like so many other things in our modern world is becoming more complicated as we lcd glasses and 3d computer games being offered. With more than one type of product on the market, if a consumer is not informed he or she will be likely to make a purchase they will regret. There are two types of 3d glasses being offered these days: passive and active. . The silver screen has the luxury of using two projectors with which they can project to separate polarized images. A plasma 3d HDTV on the other hand, can only show one image at a time. This is how active shutter technology for LCD 3d glasses came about. Using LCD technology the active shutter glasses close each lens alternatively at a blinding speed. This is synchronized with your 3d HDTV by an IR beam. The lcd HDTV then presents the images that should go to each eye alternatively in unison with the active shutter glasses. This is how 3d HDTV’s are able to simulate the appearance of 3d images.

LCD Glasses: The Brass Tacks

Any change in technology will bring with it both pros and cons. One of the biggest downfalls of LCD glasses is that they need a power supply to function. Samsung has graciously accommodated this by marketing most of their models with rechargeable batteries.

One aspect of LCD classes for which there has not yet been found a design solution, is the weight of the glasses. With the extra mass from the batteries some users find that their active shutter glasses are somewhat cumbersome.

On the other hand, many technical reviews have rated active shutter 3d glasses as the cutting edge of 3d technology when it comes to the actual presentation of 3d images. In addition more and more models are being designed with the extra weight of the batteries in mind so as to provide a more comfortable product.

Furthermore, many users have praised the ease of use of LCD glasses. In addition, Samsung has accommodated the younger among us: with children’s 3d glasses your children will never have to suffer ill-fitting 3d glasses again!

Unfortunately, the excellence in design is also reflected in the price of LCD shutter glasses. With some models coming in around $100, some may find it hard to fit in their budget.
